  • 2012 Macbook Pro Very Slow

    Hey, I figured I might as well ask here.

    So a couple of years ago, I got a used Macbook pro from 2012, and have been upgrading it to the latest OS that supports x86, and I've noticed it really chugs along now. I've had it fixed before at the Apple Store, but they don't want to work on it any more.

    So what advice can you guys give to help speed up the OS without wiping the hard drive or downgrading the OS?

    nothing. wipe the hdd or downgrade the os, maybe install linux :)

    Another vote for linux! A Macbook Pro makes a damned fine Linux Mint or
    centOS workstation.

    I already use Ubuntu on my main PC, but I want to keep a MacBook Pro to be able to access any applications and such on the OS. I just want to speed up and optimise this laptop as much as I can so I can still enjoy it.

    Thanks for the advice, I'll look into expanding the RAM and adding an SSD?

    ... I wish life had a scroll-back buffer.

    Disclaimer: I'm not a Mac guy, but I've lived with them for the last 3-4 years.

    The good news is, I believe, that generation of MBP still has upgradable RAM and storage. Max out the RAM. Use time machine to take a backup of your existing drive, swap it out for a reasonably fast SSD, and restore from time machine backup.

    You can also minimize the number of startup apps you have running, and run as few apps as you can at a time. Disable any visual enhancements (genie mode on maximize/minimize, for example).

    The bad news is that Apple doesn't care about you having a good experience on a ten-year old laptop. That's a big problem with proprietary software. This may be a good time to go cold turkey and switch to Linux. Modern distros are very easy to use, and there are lots of guides out there to skinning the UI to look like MacOS. I've been using Linux Mint Debian Edition on my travel laptop (an old Dell E7440 - a similar vintage to your MBP) and have been really enjoying it. You can download it and boot to it via USB to test it out before committing to install it.
