How long have you been a Mac user? What hardware do you have? How old is it?

I have a MacBook Pro from mid 2012, 15" retina version. It has 16GB ram, 256GB SSD and is beatup up AF, but it's still something I like to use on occasion. I enjoy using iterm2 and I particularly enjoy the touchpad gestures.

It's running I think catalina (or whatever the latest version that it's allowed to run). Still performs good, could do with a new battery but still works ok for at least 2 hours - which is what it always did for me when new.

I think the stickers I have put on the top of it are what is keeping it still held together and working lol.

I've been using a work-issued MBP 2019 for a few years. While it has a lot of nice features (i7/32GB/1TB), it's been less than 100% reliable, and task switching between it and the Windows systems I admin is a total bear.

I just bought my very first personally-owned Mac, a MacMini5,2 with an i5 and 8GB of RAM. I'm going to bump that up to 16GB and I got a knockoff data doubler for $8 that I'm going to use to put a second SSD in it (for 2x256GB). I'm going to use it for doing some work with OpenBSD on one drive, and a patched version of Catalina for testing. That's the plan anyway.

Although, part of me is tempted to rip out the power supply, convert it to 12V DC, and use it with my radio gear. Decisions, decisions.

So I was a firstime MAC user in 2011 - when I bought my first MacBook. Prior to then, I had never touched a MAC and infat when I got the MacBook, I didnt know how to turn it on or off for the first 6 months.

When I took it out of the box, it started up and I used it daily, just closing the lid each day.

I am now a huge fan and convert. Prior to the Mac, I was using Linux desktops, and while I am/was a long term Linux advocate, using it as a business desktop was a pain in the rear. Nothing worked (when interacting with others, like documents, spreadsheets, etc), too much fiddling, shutdown/reboot was faster than hibernate and many other things that frustrated me.

I still have that Macbook - my son uses it for his school. In 2013 I bought a 27' iMac, and used it daily until a month ago, where it will become the kids house "desktop" for school stuff.

I upgraded to a Mac mini M1 and love its performance. I held off for many years, simple because my 27' still works well and I couldnt justify replacing it. Now I found a new purpose for it :)

Bought my first Mac (used) in 1997. It was a G3 desktop. Can't remember the specific model. I've had several (mostly used but not all) since then. G4 iMac, G3 iBook, G4 iBook, Pismo, TiBook, G4 iMac, G5 iMac etc. Currently I have an 8500/150 a 2009 MacBook and a 2019 iMac.

The 2019 iMac was my main computer but with online learning (COVID) I set it up for my son to use rather than the tiny (14") Chromebook school issues.

I use the 2009 MacBook for light surfing/email/BBSing on occasion, and just set up the 8500 recently to dust it off and see if it still works (it does).

Haha yes I can relate to that actually.

Yes, that is one of the biggest pros on the MBP I can think of. I really like that you can just shut the lid, and the next time you open it, days later, you can just resume from what you were doing. I know that hibernation isn't a new thing, but it seems to just work better on MacBooks than anything else I've used.

Have had a Mac of some sort since the original Macintosh was new.

Longs story, but both had access to a "secure" ][e and a III, and then a
color screen Mac about a year before public launch.

Presently main is an iMac, the series that came out in 2020 with the i7. As
my ordered one wasn't going to come in for as quickly as I wanted, this one
was a higher spec one my Apple shop already had on order.

Usually the older iMacs get repurposed to either my ham radio shack or once cleaned as a gift for someone computer-needy. In the ham radio shack the
main radio computer needs to run Windows. At one point I had an iMac running Parallels for that purpose, but some of the software was troublesome. So
there is a gaming grade WinBox doing that duty.

Ah no way, you could have run Windoze in a VM to manage your Windozey needs, that's what I do so I can maintain my codeplugs for my Anytone D878UV. I just pass the USB adapter through to the VM et voila! I don't use the Windoze VM for anything else mind you, so that prolly makes life a tad happier knowing that Windoze is only needed once in a blue moon haha.

Tried and results are iffy on a good day.

What needs to run are:

SmartSDR (the client GUI end of the radio)
SmartLink (the Azure based VPN manager/coordinator part)
CAT (the ports manager)
DAX (Digital Auidio Manager)
WSJT-X (the digital program)

behind the scenes is VSP, which is driver for the DAX and SmartSDR

Traffic is over two ports, includes dattime stamed VITA-49 bidirectional traffic.

I found the setup in VM fragile and the latency all over.

Forgot to mention that my radios are such that they can open eight
simultanious "slice" radios with their own VITA-49 traffic.

There is additional handshaking to reduce the chance of uncontrolled transmisions.

There is a dedicated third party Client for macOS and a different one for iPhone/iPad use.

The issues with Linux and Android audio controls is why there is not a
general release port of SmartSDR for either.

I am still rocking a 2012 15" rMBP as well! I got it fully maxed out and
still holds up nicely today (except battery life sucks). I use Mojave so that
I can still run some of my Adobe CS6 apps! I refuse to pay $50/month for a CC subscription for software I'll occasionally use.

I've thought about upgrading to an M1 macbook pro. The hardware indeed looks impressive, but for my use case, I think it might be overkill. I don't think I'd get the benefit of the M1, running a VM to use my old apps. Seems like they'll run better natively on older hardware.. And the "port upgrades" are silly. My 2012 mac has had HDMI, SD card reader, and 2 usb ports all this
time. So after 10 years or so, it's now an "upgrade" to get these back! lol.

I just need to get a battery replacement. I HATE that the batteries are glued in and cannot be easily replaced.. Ugh.. Apple makes great looking hardware, you just can't repair it!

What a coincidence! Yeah running CS6 vs Creative Cloud is a no brainer really, if you're only going to be an occasional user. Have you looked into any open source products that you could move your work flow to and ditch Adobe altogether?

Some people say they can't just because they need everything that it offers, but realistically all the features are available in other software, just you do things potentially differently so the learning curve is there. Might work for you if you're only an occasional user, having the time to sit with said learning curve?

I hear the M1/arm thing is a real head turner, but imho you can't bean a good old x86 system. Now if I were to take it back further I would have a PPC Mac and run Amiga OS 4 on it or MorphOS or something lol.

I had a connection w/ someone who worked at Adobe back in the day, so I
scored (a legit) CS6 box suite for like $100 when normal retail was around $2000! When he told me the next version was going to be subscription based, I was so upset.

I have used open source apps like Gimp and Inkscape. They work, but not as
well as the tools I'm used to :D I did a lot of vector / motion
graphic work back in the day, but now I mostly code. (I heavily use a lot of FOSS sofware dev tools)

I really dislike the trend of no longer owning your software and everything turning into a monthly subscription. I love Open Source and generally try to use it whenever possible. However FOSS alternatives don't always suffice.

I've heard about efforts to get Linux running natively on M1 w/ the "Asahi" project. Unfortunately as Apple will not provide any support, we're at
the mercy of devs being able to reverse engineer everything themselves to
get it working. If they somehow manage to make it useable and actually take full advantage of the M1 chipset, I'd 100% get an M1 and settle for running
my old apps in a VM.

I'm gonna send my machine to Rossman Repair Group. I have followed his
channel for quite some time over the Right To Repair movement. I respect the work he does and will happily do business w/ his company.

My Mac is definitely old, but I have used some newer Windows PCs and I'm
amazed at how well it has held up. Performance is still good, the design + screen are great (and still surpass some cheaper Windows PCs of today)!

Oh and I forgot MagSafe. Don't know why they ever removed that. Regardless,

My first Mac was a G4 ibook that I got in early 2005. I fell in love with it right away. Things really kicked off for me when I got my first Macbook (The white intel Snowbook). Thanx to apps like Garageband I got into podcasting and creating audio and video. It changed me from tinkering with computers into a creative person that MADE something with computer. I'm a cross platform slider switching between Mac, Windows and LInux. But my "main driver' these days is still a mac. Sporting the 2021 M1 Macbook Air which is an absolute steal when it comes down to value for money. I love it !

I'm in the same boat as you. Have you looked at the Affinity apps? They're $50/each one-time and often go on sale for less than that. The apps are great, and they have 98% of the feature set of the Adobe stuff. Affinity Photos for raster graphics and Affinity Designer for vector.

Good to see there are some Mac users in the BBS user base too.

I started using Mac in 2004 since I got a MBP 12" G4 as a work laptop from my firm back then, because my first boss was a longtime Mac user since the first Macintosh. The MBP run Panther on it and I also got a MS Office Packet containing Virtual PC emulator in case of Windows needs. I liked this small laptop very much but in 2007 my firm replaced it by a white Macbook 13" with Intel CPU and as OS it came first with Tiger, but soon we replaced it with Leopard and later SL. For Windows needs we got Parallels. I used it
relatively long until it was replaced in 2014 by a Dell Laptop with Windows
on it since our new Admin did not like Macs at all and want them out of the firm.

My first own Mac I bought in 2008 a MBP 15" that still runs today but I only use it today once in while for old Mac software. In 2010 and also in 2015 I bought the smaller two MBA 11" as daily drivers. Finally in 2021 I bought my actual Mac a MBA 13" with M1 processor. All of my own Macs still work fine today even if I gave the two older 11" MBAs to family members. You can not destroy those Macs. :) Apart from replacing the old batteries once in while they run endless.

I later also bought an MacMini G3 from Ebay but this one I just use to run MorphOS on it and discover is Hobby-Amiga-Like-OS.

I find it very good that there is still a commercial alternative OS out there to the unique Windows mainstream. It keeps the SW landscape diverse with is a good thing in my opinion.
