• JingOS ... tablet Linux project.

Has anyone been watching the JingOS project?

It is from China; although there were promises for GitHub pages at the alpha release there isn't one currently online. :/ Hmmmm...

However, they dropped an alpha version 0.6. Its based off Ubuntu and KDE [Wow, like all the cool kids these days.] and has some cool touch gestures already baked in.

They've created a couple apps already... a calculator, calendar, a notifications pull-down and a system settings pull down. Really, it already feels 'like a tablet'.

It has support for the Surface 6 and another flagship Hawaee [I don't remember the brand..] tablet - it can be run on any x86 system, for testing tho. I can see how this could be really nice on a touch-scree monitor, mounted on a wall for controlling a smart home.. Home Assistant AND a full Linux OS.

And, a Linux OS tablet would be awesome... they promise ARM support, later, too.

The release schedule is March for version 0.8 and June for 1.0. The March release is supposed to have some more features and apps, and the June one is SUPPOSED to be fully cooked. We'll see, this alpha release IS missing a lot. You have to setup wireless with WPA supplicant if you want it, but... I didn't even trust it to be connected the the network as of yet.

I hate having issues with people because they are from China and they don't have a Github up just yet - I wouldn't care if it was someone else, and probably use many tools that aren't from the west - and just don't know.

    Anyway - JingOS. Looks neat.

    Backdoors built in?

You should get the DPRK Red Star OS and report back. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Star_OS

Lol, I've also played with Red Star 2 & 3... but I think that this project IS just people, and while I'm certainly not connecting it to the internet or running it production (You couldn't, anyway - this 0.6 version isn't really functional for anything worthwhile..) I'm also not overlooking a project simply because the creators are from China.

Sure, in the end, this might turn out to be something not worthy; but also worth MY look.

It was a total alpha; unuseable at current, however what IS there is fluid and nice... it 'feels' like an iPad - which is what they're attempting to go for.

IF it continues to release as they state, and IF the code is proven to be nice... it could be REALLY badass.

They did show the touch gestures in this alpha, and they worked really nicely. The marraige to KDE and Ubuntu leaves a lot to be desired, but like I said... for this very first alpha - impressive.
