• Sidebar LM Cinnamon

From Mindsurfer@1337:1/104 to All on Thu Aug 27 09:39:20 2020
    Hey,

i had some problems and instabilities with my current Linux Mint Mate and
so i decided to get an ssd 120gb for the fresh install of the OS and move
my /home to another HDD. That should speed up everything and make
    repairs, OS upgrades etc easier.
While at it i decided to give Cinnamon a go and installed LM20 Cinnamon.

    But..

i was used to have a sidebar with my favorite programs (starters) and it
was quite easy in Mate. Just a matter of drag an drop at the sidebar.
Now in Cinnamon i feel kinda stupid as i did not figure out how to add my programs to the sidebar. Sure, there is a applet for starters, but i hope
that is not the solution as it is somehow inconvenient to add new
starters with it and (at least for wine programs) it does use the
standard starter icon only and i dont want all my starters look the same.

So is there someone with Cinnamon and an additional sidebar out there who
could help me out here? I'd prefer a drag and drop solution to get my
program starters with its own icons over there.

    Thanks :)

Probably the wrong answer as I am just learning Linux now myself.. BUT in Ubuntu all you need to do is right click on the icon and add it to favorites and it will show in the side bar.. Hope that is right and helps...

Check out LATTE or PLANK or even CAIRO. I like Latte the best; its in the middly... cairo is TOO customizable and plank is too simple.

If needed, heres a full list of apps that do the function:
Docky, Tint2, Cairo Dock, DockBarX, Latte Dock, Plank Dock, Avant Window Navigator, i3status, lemonbar, KSmoothDock.

    docky is like macOS
    Tint2 for customization
    Cairo Advanced GUI Linux Dock
DockBar is best for Linux with XFCE
Latte has ease of use AND features
    Plank is the easiest
Avant is one of the oldest...
    i3status is for command-line fans
    lemonbar is lightweight.
KSmoothDock is best for KDE users

LOL - that should cover ya.

you can add programs to your starter bar from the main menu, but not from desktop icons. cinnamon seems not to work drag on drop and when i right
click in the main menu on a program i can add it to the bar, but only to
the bottom main bar. not to side bars. and drag and drop does sadly not
    work.
i was able to manually add programs to a starter in the sidebar, but it
is not realy easy. also i had to restart cinnamon everyime i have added
an icon, as the icons have been stretched strangely.

wow, those docks look realy nice. i am just afraid that it interferes
with my current cinnamon software and i introduce instability again.
thanks for all the docks :) i might check it out on a different linux pc
first, before i change my current work pc.

While some of them are very customizable, the one I listed as easy - I think its Docky or Plank, is NOT customizable and simple... it would plug in with cinnamon with ease; you COULD be right about some of the others, BUT then
again both Latte or Cairo could be used (and customized) with a cinnamon install to make it look great.

I'd suggest that... the one I listed as easy if you don't want to customize anything...

Or Latte if you wanna fine tune it and dial it in exactly how you want it to look.
