• Activeworlds?

From Nodoka Hanamura@1337:3/133 to All on Mon Mar 15 05:28:38 2021
A bit of a off the cuff question, but anyone remember or heard of
Activeworlds? I mentioned it on my own BBS to try and stir up conversation there but since NCBBS tends to be quiet as a dormouse outside of the echos,
It got no response. It was a 3D virtual world that started out around '96
(Same year I was born, actually). Anyone ever been or heard of it?

Born too late to experience the scene.
Born just in time to see it come back.

I never heard of that game, but I just searched online and found some screen shots on it, looks vaguely like 2nd life?

Have you played it much? What is it like compared to other similar applications?

The first MMORPG I ever remember playing was The Matrix Online. I spent quite a lot of hours in that game. I don't remember what periods exactly I played it, but it has to be around 2008-2009 is time I think.

    Hey Nodoka,

I actually played some ActiveWorlds back in 2nd half of the nineties... Amazing how long it actually lasted. Last time I checked, the biggest metaverse was still accessible.

A bit of a off the cuff question, but anyone remember or heard of Activeworlds? I mentioned it on my own BBS to try and stir up

Funny you bring it up, I was just thinking of Worlds Chat the other day,
which was 1995. usually when this stuff comes to mind, I often think of both.

I thought Worlds Chat was so flipping cool. I kinda miss it.

It's a VWMMO (Virtual World MMO) that actually preceeded Second Life by about 6-7 years, having launched around the Mid-90s. It's a treasure trove of cultural value about the early and rennaissance days of the internet
(mid/late 90s to at the latest, 2010). I highly recommend if you've got down time to sign up just to explore around.

I used to play it for years before I joined Second Life (Which ironically enough, ActiveWorlds was one of Philip Rosedale's (Founder of Linden Lab, creator of Second Life) inspirations for SL. AW is quite dated, compared even to Second Life, though AW is more simple and easier to grasp for building and scripting things in world, using a basic markup language to program objects as opposed to having to learn what amounts to Linden Lab-flavored C++.

    as a tourist I think around 2006, 2007, when I was 10-11 y/o. It's still

Worlds.com actually is still around, though for one particular reason - the owner of Worlds.com has been patent trolling for years using the original Virtual World to rake in lawsuit settlements and royalties from Linden Lab, ActiveWorlds.. and god knows how many other companies over the years. The patent was due to expire recently but I think that parasite renewed it.

Whereas Activeworlds... I have no idea. User concurrency has taken a shit on itself in recent years and given how many people claim Second Life is dead, I could take them through AW and they'd soon realize that Second Life looks
like a packed rave pre-corona compared to AW. Though Activeworlds does hold significant value as the world's first virtual world to introduce
collaborative building and some of the concepts we'd later see in Second Life and other successors to AW, and even successors of those platforms like Sinespace and the sort.

I should check them out now - I *finally* have semi-decent hardware to try
it out on! Back when SecondLife was around, I was a generation of hardware
(or two) behind, and it always seemed pokey.

Yeah, you can thank Linden Lab not being arsed to update their rendering pipeline to take advantage of modern hardware - Their viewer (client) still thrashes heavily on the CPU (single-core, no less) while leaving the GPU twiddling its' damn thumbs. It's not helped by content creators making overly complex content thinking that even mid-end systems can take this without
taking a nice big shit on themselves, and on top of that, third party developers are absolutely fucking verboten from trying to fix it if they want Linden Lab approval for use on the main grid.

I could go on and on about Second Life's issues as I've been a resident for over half a decade, and as much as I love the world, It's a pain in my ass to see glaring problems neglected like they have.

As for AW, you can run it on anything and get good framerates. I highly recommend giving the major public building worlds a visit, especially Metatropolis (cofmeta), Alphaworld, AWTeen and Mars. There's also some more quirky ones like abc, AWGames and few others I can't think of. It's a
beautiful glance back at the rennaissance of the internet.

It definitely is worth checking out. Of course, keep in mind the day and age this saw the light of day. Pretty empty too (if not completely), but ActiveWorlds sure has some history behind it.

Yeah. There's a small, dedicated userbase, but other than that, AW is more or less dead.
