I am in the process of setting up a new system and have the basic install completed.
What access level should I set the sysop user too in the config section?
Is 255 the highest level or 0 or 1 or some other numbering system?

On another note if I wish to connect my board to others will a static ip do or will I need dns?

First, let me welcome you to the club! I believe that 255 is the highest
access and is what the sysop is set at. On my board, 10 is for the newest users and 20 for validated users.

Also, I don't know if you're aware, but Avon (who moderates fsxNet) has some youtube videos on setting things up. They are somewhat out of date but he's aware of it. Here's a link to his channel: https://www.youtube.com/@MysticGuyBBS

If you just want to connect to other's then you don't need to do
anyhting. It's when you want to accept incoming (FTN/USERS), that you'll
need a static IP address (Best), or use a dynamic dns provider.

It's easy for humans to rember a domain name, verses something like
8.8.8.8 or 123.245.89.234

I will point a dns entry to my system.

Is it best to access nets like Fxnet and others through another board or connect mine directly?
What advantages might there be in connecting directly vs accessing thngs through another system?
I will want to run the bbs on a small Lightsail instance, so running a server with multiple ports really isn't an issue for me.

If you have a static IP address, there's no need to use an outside service to access your BBS. You only need to do that if your IP address is constantly changing.

Your best to get your node number. Information about joining fsxnet can
be found at https://fsxnet.nz/doku.php

You will be assigned a node nummber and hub to conect to.

How your system is setup has nothing to do with it. It just needs to
speak the correct protocol's (Mystic does), and your all set.
