Network optimization goes apace....

So far the results are.... well negative... my actual transfer speeds are now as slow as I've ever seen them. I had a routing issue on the back network, where I can't actually speak to them directly any more.

AND I've come to the conclusion that in a Motherboard that actually has PCIe slots on it, the PCI slots are just there for looks and in way shape or form useable... Seeing as every network card into ANY PCI slot in either "server" resulted in the nic either not appearing in the OS, or it was enough to stop the system even making POST. :/

Top to bottom my network looks a lot less like a spiderweb than it used to, and really has 2 specific layers in it now. This makes it hard for me to understand why its all so SLOW now. During this reshape I was able to pull out 2 hub/switches, an 8x100 and a 4x1000... So all thats in use now is the ISP's router which has always been a bit dubious, I have to restart it to use its web interface. And all the upper local traffic now goes via this flying brick. So maybe its become a bottleneck. I dunno...

All the second layer traffic slows via brightmatter. Which managed to get a PCIe nic installed just like that, after 8 failures with PCI cards. Said interface seems to be doing its thing and is now the NIC handling file transfers, while its original nic handles the communications with other storage devices. Sophos being a router with 4 ports all bridged is doing that service out back. So it looks like a bit of a daisy chain across there.

All is not well on the back side though, I see Sophos is reporting a port doing 10Mb I think, which is strange, I haven't had the manual out to check what the LED is trying to tell me. So I might need to try and force a higher speed out of one end or the other if autodetection isn't.
