Heheheh.. It *is* far easier to do that when you are immersed in a game
or busy doing something else on the computer and don't what to leave the computer. That is what's probably really going on.

The ad tracking and data collector is what bothers me the most. I know
it doesn't others on here, and thats ok, but when a small business owner, I would get so many "Start your own amazon store" videos within my newsfeed that I couldn't keep up on turning them off.

The sponsored videos (not the one's that your 'friends' would post) don't seem to show up in the mobile interface: m.facebook.com

I don't know if true, but I have heard their data can also tell when
you walk into select stores, or what web pages you surf. SO ... I
might be overly "acting like my 74 year old paranoid dad" here but ..
well .. I guess it's within the genes.

I noticed an increase in ads on the full version FB that resembled
material from other website visits that I was conducting in another tab. But, since using the mobile interface on my laptop/desktop pc, I don't see any ads at all.

Hmmmm ... you might be right; or am I ignoring her text messages
intentionally to encourage actual human interaction? lol! Usually, she's binging netflix when I get the endless texts from the other room.

Thats good to know. I typically just keep Facebook on my phone as I have enough windows open all of the time anyway as is. But if I do switch over to the desktop version, I'll save the link. I have noticed LESS fishy ads promoting "get rich quick schemes" within the newsfeed, however more ads in
the middle of videos I click to watch, as well as more targeted ads on items
I have purchased; one example would be the clothing line "Thin blue line," which I have only a ball cap of, on Amazon. I can't recall more as I
literally only check out my notifications and put the phone down for the day (probably for the last two months now ..)

I made only one purchase from banggod.com once, and the next time I used
the full version of FB, the side panel kept populating with more
banggood.com ads. This even carried over the next time I would load a
    google result for something else.

So.. it's "m.facebook.com" from now on when I am on a desktop/laptop. I really only want to check if there is anything waiting for me on
    Messenger.

"m.facebook.com" finishes loading with about 200KB and under 5 seconds.

The full version of FB takes nearly 30 seconds and almost 2MB.

The choice is clear, for me.

I knew I couldn't be the only one who has experienced that. The ads don't bother me as much as the data collection and how much their systems (their as in amazon, microsoft, google, facebook) know about us. It has nothing to do about "having something to hide," but rather the fact that stalking is
illegal beit a person or what should also be a massive data base.

Thats a huge difference! At the moment I'm in zoom classes from 9am-5pm EST, plus homework. While on, I also have the BBS running, Virtual Studio, Node, Python 2.7 and 3, PHP, Slack, Git Bash, and chrome for CodePen ... so ... the system seems to have enough going on. But after this class is over, half if not more won't be used .. so .. perfect time for the holidays to jump back
into Facebook (probably after novembers elections ..) Not to mention 3 kids
on tablets or a TV, and my wife completing her Masters in ENL education (as
now required by the state) and on classes all day as well. I'm suprised we have any bandwidth .. amazingly our fiber line has been buffer-less. Albeit not the reason I'm not using facebook, obviously it wouldn't consume much .. just a lot going on here. Oh and 2 rasberry pi's, forgot about those. My
12 year old has taken them over and is trying to learn to make minecraft
mods. I'll be glad when school is back in session and I have the house and wifi to myself :)

    Hows your business doing?

"They" probably already figured out that although some users would be disgusted in the tracking/reselling behaviour, most people would just not care - especially if they are allowed use a tool (such as google or fb)
for free. The documentary "The Great Hack" reveals that great power and privilege strains integrity in the organizations and people we hope to
    trust.

We should all be using something like Tor. But that darn thing has
    website feature limits.

Damn right. And, I'm sticking to it. I'm paying for this data shit; I
get pissed off that sites like FB would ride on *my* dollar so that they could push excess code (ads) and pull data (tracking) at my expense.

..I'll be glad when school is back in session and I have the house

And when *is* schoool back in session in your neck of the woods? There
    seems to be uncertainty here.

    Hows your business doing?

You had to ask. :/ Well.. if I was a credit card company or a bank, I'd obviously be doing much better. It should be a crime for gov't to force people *not* to work (threatening penalties, etc) yet still allow cc companies and banks to be totally unaffected.

I have that same problem with SWMBO... although I've lost my phone to her as well so theres no text it'll be FB messages if I happen to have FB open. She's making off with my phone because hers refuses to chromecast to the dongle in the TV where oddly enough mine does.... This is the netflix I was going to get rid of 2-3 months ago too... I don't even see it now.. :P

Somewhere in the wayyyyback machine, an old GF and I used to have near cutting edge stuff, not bleeding edge but close. She'd buy new stuff, I'd be overclocking old stuff. Anyway for some time there because we'd be using the same stuff it'd be nothing to be having an online conversation with her although she's sitting at the same bench right next to me... but you'd intersperse it with comments as well.. Quite a number of people thought we were a tad strange in this regard.

Hmm I was thinking about this FB affair.....

I don't think I use it the way anyone intended it by the sound of it. I have to admit I never go looking through the "feed" I'll have a look at notifications and messages, and then just go direct to any group I want to look at.

If there's an Ad pop up in the section I can see at log on, I report it as inapropriate or a scam. But I don't see many at all. I don't think I could cope with it if I had to rely on what FB was putting in the feed.

The other tools that I never leave home without are AdBlock+ I don't know if the ad's are of a type it will recognise, but I'm also not willing to disable it to find out :) And Privacy Badger, which helps hide your cookies and other tracking information.

On a side note, I've bought goodies through Banggood a number of times, but I've never seen any advertising pop up for them anywhere, on FB or out of Google. Over a period of time BG has been my go to buying spot, at times their quite handy, haven't bought anything from anyone for a while though.

Last but no least, I'm intrigued (this one may not have been you specifically Ogg) What tool did you use to measure the quantity of content popping on an FB page? I can't think of anything that will do that for FireFox in Win7

I use NetMeter v1.1.4 (for XP)

I primarily use the XP pc (laptop) for most of my online use.

BTW.. It does not install properly on Win7. And now I have a little mess
to get rid of it manually from that pc.

But Netmeter is a fine performer with XP.

The other tools that I never leave home without are AdBlock+ I don't

I've reliably used AdBlock or uBlock Origin, and they seem to let through an awful lot of sponsored posts, since Facebook has been deliberately going
    around adblockers.

But I've had great luck with FBPurity (fbpurity.com), which does a fair bit beyond ad blocking. It does seem like one random guy, though, especially considering how fbpurity.com looks like an HTML 3 website.

Not that I'm complaining, given how I've actively made sites look like they sprung from BBSs. I have no idea how people can stand light mode when dark
mode is a choice. Or even when dark mode _isn't_ a choice.
