    Hi folks,

I'm Joe Doom and I'm back on the scene after about 5 years away...

I might have previously gone under the names of tekhammer or
SpiroDotgeek. But what's in a name?

Running a new board and have now seemed to have successfully hooked up to fsxNet and HAPPYnet, and running Talisman. :)

Currently freezing my tiddies off down here in NZ..

Hi Al, haha wasn't expecting someone local. :) Damn this BBS thing must
really be making a comeback. haha

I'm in Wellington too. Wainui in fact. :) And people keep telling me it
was snow, but I just thought it was hail. Not that I was too keen to
check it out. I was working from home, and only went out to go and
collect my new bins. Other than that I would have just stayed in front of
the fireplace (which I should be doing now) ignoring the outside world.

Yep, I also noticed this -- *lots* of people starting up their BBSes again, and lots of new ones, too!

So many BBS packages are getting updated now too. It was hard to choose.

I used to run RemoteAccess in the 90s, but thought it would be better to go for some "native" Linux software when reviving my BBS. Still much of a stock install, but with some ANSI stuff from the old BBS, and have been working on getting some FTNs connected and things working correctly rather than customizing too much... at least yet. :)

Yeah, tat's really awesome, and I think that Avon's Youtube videos as
well as Hyjinx's more recent Back to the BBS documentary must be helping
in some big part. I saw that others have been making Youtube videos too
(but haven't watched them yet) and I think that's great. It makes it so
much easier to follow along and really understand what's going on with
    setups.

Same here for the customisations. I'm not very good with ANSI, so hope to commission someone once I figure out what I want from them. :)

In the 90s I ran all sorts (as long as they were free haha). So many of
my friends were running Searchlight, but as soon as I saw it cost money I
    noped out of there. :)

But I ran boards on PCs and on Acorns and I think I tested one on an
Amiga but don't think I ever went live with it.

I do remember my main boards which were running Telegard, Renegade, and eventually a locally made one called Pobble. I've never been able to find
that software again and I think the developer moved overseas. But I
remember it having an amazing message reader and scanner. From memory it
was similar to the current index readers ... way way before its time.

Then when I got into the telnet BBS scene (around 2013? I think), I ran
Mystic. I really like it and what g00r00 has done but felt the need for
change and more experimentation, so went with Talisman this time around.

After watching the Back to the BBS documentary, I'm wondering about
    Legacy/X (which I can't find--their wiki refers to an INSTALL.ZIP which
isn't linked anywhere), or even setting up a board on an Amiga. It'd have
to be on an emulator though because I got rid of all my Amiga hardware
a couple of years ago. :(

Yeah for sure.. It'd good to know if there are.. You think they're
reading this and chuckling at us silently? hehe

When I was on facebook, I had organised a semi-regular meetup for old
BBSers from back in the day. At the time (maybe 6 years ago?) I ran a
board back then too, but couldn't get people logging in and caring.. even
if it wasn't my board.. they seem to have done their dash and that was
the way to communicate at the time, but now it's facebook.

But I did make some great friendships from the dial-in BBS days which are basically most of my friends today. :) and we had some good catchups..

I could probably rustle up a few of them to go to a boozer much easier
than getting them to log into a telnet BBS tho. ;)

Yep i am the same way. I almost never use Fecesbook accept for ocasionally messager for txting family. Sometimes if there is an important development in the UFO Disclosure community, i will post an article to Fecesbook. just like this article here: https://bigthink.com/surprising-science/us-navy-inventions-change-reality

but ya, Fecesbook is on a decline. everyone no longer trusts any of those EvilCorp platforms anymore. Originally Fecesbook was a Darpa / CIA project called "LifeLog" the day that Fecesbook went live, LifeLog closed its doors.
so basicly it was a hand off of a Darpa CIA project from Dev to Prod. and
they hired whats his name to be the front man for it.

This sounds like a reasonable conspiracy theory, but I tend to assume that it was a hormonal guy trying to figure out an easy way to hit on/creep on women.

But I say that without remembering what the actual story is, nor having any great interest in watching the movie they made about it. (not, of course,
that movies "based-on-real-events" or whatever are anything more than, "hey, this gave me a great idea for a movie plot!")

Though now this makes me think of the almost-entirely-unrelated King of Kong "biography" that Jason Scott panned as being more fictionalized story than biography.

But then later we found out that Billy Mitchell really did begin cheating at some point, so perhaps the villainy was somewhat deserved.
