• A COVID-safe getaway

From Alpha@21:4/158 to All on Thu Feb 11 08:05:24 2021
It's President's Day weekend here in the US, and for many that means it's
time to GTFO and enjoy some longer time off.

My family has been cooped up for over a year, all
working/schooling/living remotely and we are going insane. So, we decided
to book a trip up to the mountains, where there's a bit of snow, and quarrantine... somewhere else.

It's only about a 3 hour drive to Tahoe from the Bay Area, traffic
willing, but we are getting an early start so hoping we're not stuck in a
jam. This is trafitionally called "Ski Week" in the Bay Area and it can
    be downright nutty.

We're not snow people. We don't ski. We all grew up in Southern
California enjoying warm beaches, so this will be something new-ish for
    us.

It's also my daughter's 15th birthday, so wanted to do something special
for her. She's had a rough time, and it's a hard age to be in normal
times. Plus, she just came out as gay to us -- so yeah, let's go get away
for the weekend and have some fun.

Hope you all have a good weekend as well!

Good to hear you all are getting some time out. In this part of the
country, it looks to be far from a weekend for GTFO-ing. We had an ice
storm. It is not too bad here... maybe 1/4 inch accumulations so the roads
are slick but the power is still on (knock on wood). Other areas just to
the south sound like they may have got it worse.

I also don't get Monday off.

Alpha, my pal... you deserve it.

I know the North Tahoe region very well... I hope ya'll get you your spot, enjoy some casinos, beaches and just North Shore. :P Its fun to take a day trip to Tahoe City - its far North Shore, but a nice drive... theres a great burger place in Kings Beach. (On the left, coming from South Lake Tahoe... not biggy if you don't grab it; Tahoe City has much BETTER food...)

Glad you can scoot away with the fam bam - I'll check in on Drunken Gamer. :P

Have a great weekend man... I've been playing hookey all week, and didn't realize that its Presidents Day weekend. Jeez Paul. I gotta get moving. Have a safe, fun and awesome trip! Ya'll deserve it dude!!

We found a quaint little cabin within walking distance to Heavenly area,
trying to avoid the more populated areas--but the restaurants all have
outdoor seating, only problem, snow. It's snowed the last two nights and
    it's absolutely gorgeous here.

I'll check out that burger joint... Thinking about doing Blue Dog Pizza
    for dinner tonight :)

I'm really loving quiet mornings like this. Family is still asleep, snow
is coming down and the sun is starting to come up. Fresh coffee brewing.
A warm blanket. Finally reading "The Way of Kings."

Sometimes you wish you could stop time.

We were planning on taking a trip up to my family's cabin in Soda Springs today, but the roads look pretty bad. We've got an SUV with AWD and new H/T tires, but when they do chain controls, I-80 slows to a crawl. Not worth it
to spend 7 hours getting there for an overnight.

We're going to drop my daughter and dog off with my mom, head down to Paso Robles and go explore down there. See where the road takes us on a gloomy, gray weekend morning.

Do know that the burget joint I recommended is REALLY just a hole in the wall. IMO, the journey to Tahoe City is worth it just to see the Lake as you drive around - Just wanna make sure you don't go to a suggestion and think it sucks. :P It just a very local, good burger while on the way to a nice touristy town. :P

I love that area, and am jealous... :P I'd enjoy a little gaming, but to each their own. :) I'm in Portland and guess what?!?!? Its a snow storm HERE, too! They all told me it snows here every once in a while, but I hadn't seen it yet...

Well, we have 6+ inches and... I'm from Texas. This is nuts to me! OMG.

Portland shuts down, so kinda boring for me; I can't go visit my girl even... so I guess BBSing is on my Saturday. As I said, I'll go 'check in' on Drunken Gamer... w00t w00t super hacker city!! :P

Cheers; have a GREAT weekend brotha!

Are we talking about the Char-Pit? Wonderful, cook to order burger joint burgers and milkshakes, and those crispy shoestring fries. Divey, but look
at the line out the door! (well, pre-pandemic, before *everyone* lined up outside, there were lines at the Char-Pit...)

There's a great coffee shop in Incline Village, the IV Coffee Lab. Great
name, great pastries, and a nice little outdoor patio. I like being able to say I've traveled to another state for a good cup of coffee.

... How would someone else do it?

100%, you know the one I was describing, Poindexter. :P At least I know it WAS a good reccomendation. :P The more I thought about it I didn't know...

I also love Incline Village... :P I used to stomp from South Lake thru Kings Beach and Incline, all the way back round to South Lake Tahoe... I once had to pull over on a motorcycle and literally take a nap in the USPS in Tahoe City.

Anyway, neat to know that other humans enjoy where I do. :P

Yep. My parents built a cabin in Serene Lakes, a little community south of Soda Springs near Donner Summit. Spent many a college summer there, with my group of friends split between my cabin and a college buddy's parents house on the west side of Donner Lake.

I've spent a lot of time watching Truckee grow up, and heading down 267 to King's Beach. I like that side a lot more than the Tahoe City side.

We were going to go up this weekend to check in on the cabin, but the roads looked pretty bad. While I've wanted to try out my new H/T tires on our Mazda CX-9, I didn't want to spent 6+ hours going through chain controls.
