• Text editor with a team server?

From The Godfather@21:1/165 to All on Fri Jan 22 11:10:50 2021
    Hey all,

Hope all are staying healthy, safe, and all lives are doing well!

I was curious for any suggestions on a good text editor, one used more for programming like VS or Geany, that offer server access for teams to view and contribute to coding? Similar to how Moebius allows for ANSI collaboration?

    Any input would be awesome.

I suspect Emacs has this. Emacs has everything :-P

I'd probably just host the code in a git or cvs service or, failing that, upload it to a Nextcloud instance. The Nextcloud instance has the advantage of not forcing people to use a specific program to access the repository.

Probably not what you were expecting, but consider this advice provided in good faith :-P

Nextcloud can offer live chat for a limited number of users.

    Thank you Arelor,

We are using gitlab/github. Just wanted a way to work live on projects together and chat at the same time. As opposed to repositories. I'll check out Emacs.

Well, i would say Gvim as its free and UNIXy. but i dont think it will show ANSI very well. another txt editor is notepad++. it *might* be able to handle ANSI.
oh also there is nano lol

    Hey there :)

Just a note I found some old packets you had sent in middle of last year that did not get tossed. They had packet passwords in them. I opted not to toss
them in as I would need to set the packet password in place and then that
would cause this last message you sent not to be imported.

So long story short all is well now and I have left your HUB settings alone.

I was curious for any suggestions on a good text editor, one used more

That I don't know sorry... but someone will have a few ideas I'm sure :)

    Thanks NS,

I have two version of that on my system, I'll have to dig further into them. I've used one for C, the other for web pages, but have never used them for teams or chatting. I knew I could make a local host but was unaware I could assign a server for others to join in. Thank you.

I know you said NO; but dude... I think for us Google Docs is probably the easiest, dummy way, to do it - and have Discord opened right next door. The other way, Gobby - that someone suggested, will work great - but it IS a server (like vnc viewer) that we'd both have to run... then Gobby is the text editor that we each use ON our computers...

It'll work GREAT... but also, we can just open a Google Docs and go. Chatting in Discord. :P

If you're just editing actual documentation, contracts, general docs, etc., Office 365 of Google Apps is probably the cleanest way to do it. O365 is far more feature-rich, but Google Apps is better at simultaneous editing because
it doesn't have the sloppy SharePoint backend.

If you're coding together, then no? Visual Studio Code with the Live
Share plugin seems like a much wiser choice.

Things are going, well. Looking forward to the vaccine slowing things down in the states; it'll be nice to have some sense of normalcy again. Otherwise, kids and wife are doing well.

Yes, I'm finally starting to write my own mods with BP's guidance as needed. He's great about not giving me the answer unless I waive the white flag, but rather pointing me in the right direction. As a team, BP, Paulie and I have compiled some pretty neat mods you should check out some day. I keep all live on my BBS and/or within the RCS mod menu off my main menu's. Lately I've been building out a 132x37 theme thats coming along pretty dang well, so collectively we had been focused on rewriting a lot of mods that replace stock Mystic things: last callers, oneliners, whos on, now a user list, and BP treated me to a Christmas Gift and created a hitman for the Underground which is pretty neat and an un-requested surprise :) Paulie is working in a Sixel magazine reader and image gallery for those with Syncterm thats really cool, with the help of Meatlotion. So lots of new collaboration going, along with an occasional challenge XQTR throws my way (but his challenges are .py or .mpy .. too complex for me to absorb at the moment but excited to get to the point where I can, like you, understand how he makes his codes lights go blinky bink :)

How are things with you? Whats been your latest projects/hobbies you're enjoying other then work?

Over here we may have had our first case of suspected community transmission
in two months reported today. This led to a televised media conference
fronted by our minister of health. They are starting to do some rapid
contact tracing now and hope within 24 hours to have a better idea of what's going on. It will be a wake up call to some here who have become quite complacent in not scanning QR codes that help contact tracers at times of urgency.

That aside, yeah we're not too bad here. I've just been back at my first week at work this year and so getting back into routines again. The first weekend after I went back is almost at an end (Sun night now) and suddenly I need to get some zzz and get up again and into a Monday morning in less than 12 hours time. Meh.

Coolio, yes I see them being hatched out in the file bases. I am yet to play with any as I am working on setting up a replacement Linux system to run my Fido HUB etc. etc.

Making the lights go blinky bink is a serious business :) Ha! Nice to read of the collaboration going on.. that's cool.

How are things with you? Whats been your latest projects/hobbies you're enjoying other then work?

Not bad. I have things I would like to do on the fsxnet.nz site and also this work to do on my Fido HUB so both are keeping me busy. I am planning to try
and downsize the number of computers I have running at home such that I can migrate stuff running on one over to another then shutter the machine. The
plan being to save on the power bill a bit. But the devil is in the detail
and each system took me time to set up and not all software seems to want to play nice in another OS. I'll get there but I can see a chunk of this year being taken up with slowly moving stuff over to other systems then closing
    the old boxes down.

Been doing a bit of gardening as of late, quite enjoy being out in the fresh air in the weekends, and with the warmer temps here (summer) it's nice
    outside for the most part.

Next month I plan to take part in a cycle challenge and do some riding to
work. You can read more about it at www.lovetoride.net/nz

Oh I was given a Google nest wifi mesh router and a few access points. I have yet to play with them but think I am going to hit an issue with the fact that
I can't disable the router function in the google device and don't want to disable my high end router I'm currently using. All the reading I have done
so far suggests I could end up using it but doing so with a double nat issue and the mesh aspect not working :(
