I am thinking of donating a 9 year old laptop to a co-worker who is not
as well off as me so she can have a computer for adult school so she can get her GED.
I am likely to buy myself a 400 dollar laptop to replace the one I give away. Its good to have an emergency computer if your main workstation
goes to crap.
Really great on you, Sir [or Madame] Galt. The one volunteer gig I like to do here in Portland, OR is with FREE GEEK. Their motto is [something like] "Technology should be available to all." and they specialize in eWaste and recycling of tech. They take donated cell phones, computer systems, hardware and... almost anything technology related and make sure everyone has access.
They sell smartphones from $20 - $100. They sell laptops from $100-200. They sell desktops from $50-150. And, they donate to many many children and adults who are in need.
I think your efforts are awesome... I hope you throw some Linux on the laptop that will breathe new life into the machine and I hope the recipient is a user who will enjoy the hardware. It sounds like they need it much more than you do.
